Canyon Leadership Program

CGI’s Canyon Leadership Program is intended for individuals who facilitate canyoneering programs in group settings such as college outdoor recreation leaders, experiential education program instructors, wilderness therapy staff, camp directors, and youth leaders.

Leadership skills are essential for university outdoor programs, clubs, youth program volunteers, and anyone leading less experienced partners through canyons. CGI’s Canyon Leadership Program combines technical and experiential learning, designed to seamlessly transition into CGI’s certification program.

This program sets the training standard for adventure-based and experiential education practitioners. A Canyon Leader, distinct from a professional guide, acts as a facilitator and mentor, supporting individuals aspiring to self-reliance in canyoneering.

Participants will refine technical skills, experience personal growth, and develop leadership abilities. While technical competencies are crucial, we equally prioritize intrapersonal growth and interpersonal dynamics.

Course & Assessment

Individuals who feel they possess a significant portion of the knowledge and skills in Levels I and II of the Competencies Checklist may register for the Canyon Leadership Course/Assessment (covering Level III of the Competencies Checklist). The course/assessment is typically offered as a 24-hour program by CGI certified Instructor/Evaluators who are CGI Certified Guides, Level 3 or higher.
